More Cold, More Problems
An air conditioner doesn't create cold air. That's impossible. What it really does is take heat out of the air inside your home. For heating, a heat pump takes heat from outside and pulls it inside. This is fine and easy to do at 'relatively' warm temperatures.
The downside is that the less heat there is outside, the harder the heat pump has to work. Traditionally, heat pumps have not been very effective heating units when the outside temperature drops below freezing. They start losing efficiency very rapidly, then freeze up, and have to go into defrost mode. When that happens, you aren't getting any heat.
Which has always been a big obstacle for homeowners in cold climates. A heat pump would be useful to them for certain parts of the year, but in real winter you need a furnace.

A standard heat pump split system is installed with flare fitting line sets. A technician runs the copper refrigerant lines from the air handler to the condenser. They flare the fittings, vacuum to remove all the burrings, charge with nitrogen to check for leaks, vacuum out the nitrogen, then, finally, charge with the appropriate refrigerant.
It is a time consuming, but necessary process, for traditional flare fittings.
The MrCool Quick Connect Pre-Charged Line Set eliminates virtually all of those steps. The Pre-Charged No-Vac lines plug in quickly and easily. You don't have to flare them, vacuum them, charge with nitrogen, vacuum again, or charge with refrigerant. I am building a new home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (zone 1). The home is about 1325 sq feet heated. By normal calculations that would require a 2.5 ton unit. Will the 2/3 unit work in this capacity? I was told over sizing the unit will cause humidity issues. I am concerned giving this area has a relatively high humidity year round.
Traditionally, over sizing can lead to humidity issues, since an over size air conditioner would not run long enough to extract a significant amount of humidity. However, new designs like the Universal allow a lot more leeway when it comes to sizing than traditional systems. The Universal is a variable-speed system. It doesn't start out on the most extreme setting. It slowly ramps up capacity to meet demand. This doesn't mean that you should grossly over size, of course. So can a Mr. Kool Universal series unit extract heat below 32F WITHOUT the optional heat kit?

That article refers to a typical heat pump. The Universal is able to heat in temperatures as low as -5º Fahrenheit at 100% heating capacity. It can also heat in temps as low as -22º Fahrenheit at a heating capacity of 78%.
I have a 10 year old Lennox heat pump that can work down to 38 F. Temperatures where I live in CT are down to -10 many nights in February. I have read that Mr. Cool can handle down to -5 F at 100% efficiency, and down to -22 F overall. It does sound like a good fit for me when the Lennox heat pump goes (the Lennox saved me the additional cost of going from an AC unit to a heat pump in just one winter, so it has definitely been a good investment). My question is different as no one has seemed to ask it. As you may have guessed, the only service I get where I live is electricity. I have to use a supplemental oil furnace to heat not only below 38 F, but to heat my well water as well. Can Mr. Cool heat a hot water heater like my oil unit does, or would I have to buy an electric water heater instead? I had to replace the water heater just five years ago so I am not anxious to pay for another water heater as well. Thank you.
Do I have to have aux heat installed if the low average OAT during our winter is 30F? I know aux is used during a defrost cycle but is is necessary to have it?

I have not yet found COP data on the Mr. Cool units. Do you have this information available? I am trying to calculate electrical consumption during heating to see if it is worthwhile to use the Mr. Cool and eliminate my natural gas usage vs a Goodman Heat Pump unit and keeping the gas installed. I am looking at the Mr. Cool universal 4-5 ton unit and the Goodman 4 ton 18 SEER unit. The Goodman has MBh, COP, Amp data from 65F down to -5F. We do not have COP data for the Universal. It is HSPF rated. I would say that it is unlikely a Universal will be more efficient than a heat pump and natural gas furnace combined.
The Universal condenser and air handler can be integrated into an existing furnace system. However, that can be a complicated job. How to do so is certainly beyond the scope of the usual information we provide.
I noticed the MrCool Universal is not Energy Star Rated. I'm guessing it is not listed yet because it is new? Are there plans to get it Energy Star rated? What is the process in order to do so?
I live in Los angeles and If I install the AC unit outside where it will be exposed to intense direct afternoon sunlight heat, and rain, will it harm or cause early wear on the internal parts of the unit such as the copper tubing of the evaporator coil, and electrical parts?
How does your system (sequence of operation) on my heat pump there is a demand for heat outdoor air temp is 27deg. My system goes into defrost for five minutes in the meantime I use aux heat 15kw to maintain heat while my pump terminates defrost cycle, what is the sequence of your unit, does it have electric heat for defrost?
I use oil for heating my 1200 sq ft home. I’m in zone 7 and rarely get down to 0 F in the winter. I love the idea of getting rid of the oil furnace, tank and maintenance. The Mr Cool universal sounds great ! My concern is operating cost. I’m in Connecticut where we pay 22 cents/ kWh ! Am I going to save money versus oil when I switch to the Mr cool universal.

The Universal we have installed in Grand Forks used about 2500 kWh for the month of January. So, whether or not you will save depends on how much you're paying for fuel oil.
I use a natural gas boiler to heat water through my radiators. The home was built in 1917, so there is no ductwork. What work would need to be done to convert to Mr. Cool?
The Universal is a traditional central air system, so it does require duct work. Adapting your home to the Universal would require installation of ductwork. Which would be expensive.
Do you offer install and maintenance support over the phone for the MrCool Universal Heat Pump and Air Handler system?
I live in eastern Iowa, and I have talked to an HVAC contractor almost willing to install the MrCool Universal system for my 1300 sf home, but they are hesitant because they are concerned if they have questions about the product during install or later on in years that they won't find good support for the product. Living in Maryland the winter temperatures will dip below 32deg. With ordinary heat pumps that means as the temperature drops so does the discharge temperature from the heat pump causing us to use the electric heat to keep the temperature at 70-72. Is this the same with your units? What is the discharge temperature in relation to the outside temperature?

The Universal can produce high discharge temperatures at outdoor ambient temperatures in single digits. We commonly see 20 to 25F air temperature rise even at 10F.

Hi I'm Andy I live in Michigan I came across the house and unit you have in Grand Forks my question is the electrical bill he showed in the video is that just for the Mr.cool running or was they using the house and all amenities like tv microwave stove dishwasher ect. You could always replace them with newer, higher efficiency furnaces. If you're trying to get away from gas heating, a sophisticated DC inverter heat pump like the Universal is a real option for a lot of households.
do you HAVE one that has more seer, what about HSPF what is its rating? i have a 1200 sq ft manufactured home - new low E windows R21 in walls R30 in ceiling, R30 -n floor
I just ordered several MrCool Universals from Ingrams. Since I am in VT/NH I am looking to add a hydro-coil (Aquecoil) as the second stage (in place of electric coils as I have a boiler for the radiant floors and the existing hydro-air unit). Can I assume that the airhandler will operate with just the second stage when the outdoor condenser is not operating (its too cold/snow)?

The MrCool Universal is not a two-stage air handler. Rather, it is a single stage that can be set for either 2 ton air flow or 3 ton air flow. What you are describing would constitute a dual fuel heat pump system. If the hydronic coil was located downstream from the refrigerant coil, then it would not need to be treated as dual fuel and the hydronic would be treated as auxiliary/emergency heat.
We live in PHX Az this week we are expecting a week of high temp from 114°-117° days and lows of 90° at night. Are these units able to cool in such hot weather?
