Homeowners who investigate geothermal heat pump systems for their homes are likely to run across an optional component called a desuperheater. The name is not exactly descriptive. Which can lead to questions like, "What does this thing do," and, "I don't understand the purpose of a desuperheater?"
Which we totally get. So, without further ado....
The Super Desuperheater
During summer your geothermal heat pump cools your home by drawing heat from the interior air. It then passes this heat through the system, and dumps it into the ground or water or whatever you're using. An air conditioner does basically the same thing. Except it dumps the heat outside where it's just gone.
But why waste it?
Waste Not, Want Not
A desuperheater connected to your geothermal heat pump means you don't have to waste that heat. Instead, your ground source system can dump that heat into tank to heat water. You can use that water for showers, dishes, clothes, or whatever you want. It's regular household hot water made as a byproduct of geothermal air cooling.
Which means energy savings. Because instead of relying solely on traditional tank water heater, or even a new on-demand heat system, your home can use a desuperheater to cut electricity consumption and maximize savings. If your geothermal heat pump runs a lot in the summer, you may be able to entirely eliminate your need for traditional water heating methods during that season. This is a great way to minimize energy waste and do right by the environment while you save yourself a little green. Or a lot of green depending on how much you spend to heat water right now.
And Winter?
A desuperheater works in winter too. It's not quite as efficient as in summer, since you need all the heat you can get when the temperature gets cold. Despite that, it's still a useful addition as it benefits from geothermal efficiencies rather than electric heating inefficiencies.
Hopefully, now you know the purpose of a desuperheater. When you order your geothermal heat pump, make sure to include one of these awesome water heating machines.
