A lot of HVAC maintenance is sophisticated and requires special skills, but anybody can change an air filter. In a lot of ways, the air filter is the most important thing you can maintain on your home system. If you don't change it, your system is going to suffocate. If you do change it, you can add years to the operating life. So buy a bunch of filters, and change them on a regular basis.
