What to do With Leaking Line Sets on the MrCool DIY? - Ask the Expert Episode 249

This question is from Forest. “Hey Dan, I believe my lines leaked. Is it possible to buy another pre-charged line set and hook it back up and it will work fine?” So, he was asking this about the MrCool DIY ductless mini split heat pump. So, he’s got pre-charged lines and he says they leaked. Can you get new ones? The answer is maybe. If only the lines leaked, like they were damaged in shipping or something, then sure, you can just get another set of lines and put them on there. If they leaked while they were connected to the unit and it was running, you might have lost more charge than what was just in the lines. In that case you need to have somebody come out and check the charge on the unit to see if it was at the right level or not. If it is, then just get new lines and connect them. If it’s not, you would then have to have the unit charged up to what was appropriate. Got more questions? Just ask in the comments below.

Hello. I bought the 2 ton DIY unit. When I unpackaged the new line sets, one of them was wet. And I cannot get the unit to adequately ever cool down 300 ft.². Could it be that the one WET line set lost charge? Mr. cool never returns my calls when I ask about that. And than you for being more responsive than Mr Cools “support”.

I recently installed a new MRCOOL DIYM218HPW01C07 DIY Multi-Zone Series Ductless Heat Pump. one of the line set valves was already open when I attempted to open it. I do not want to start the unit if there is a problem. The installation went smoothly and there are no apparent leaks.

I have a DIY 5 zone system, I installed the largest indoor unit in the wrong location on the outside unit. I haven’t opened the valves. Can I relocate it to the correct location or will the quick connectors not seal again.

Hi. This is the second mini split I'm installing and unfortunately had an issue with this one. I installed as per instructions. I opened the valves on the outdoor unit. I was trying to get the excess coiled back up and I kinked one of the lines...it did not leak though. No leaks on the unit. It has not yet been wired, so it has not been turned on. If I go ahead and close the valves at the unit, can I just go ahead and disconnect and install a new line set? I assume the proper sequence will be to close the valves, disconnect at the indoor unit. disconnect at outdoor unit?

Is it possible to move a DIY Mr Cool installation simply by first closing the refrigerant valves, then disconnecting the sealed lines - presumably the valves in the lines will close again when the lines are disconnected and maintain the charge in the lines as all the pieces are relocated

Hi Dan. i have a similar questions for my DIY Mrcool universal system, except ONE of the lines leaked (The bigger one with gas in it--not the liquid line). It's a 35ft line. Do you think the loss of the gas was small/nominal and the unit will work fine with the existing amount of refrigerant in the other 35ft line and in the coil ? Thanks!

I would like to relocate my condenser which would require a longer line, could I just simply add line or do I have to get the system charge if I disconnect the current line?

Are the lines pre-charged (with refrigerant), or pre-vacuumed? Same for the indoor air handler - is it pre-charged with refrigerant or, or pre-vacuumed?

The lines were leaking when we connected to the diy universal, I got them to stop but not sure if I should still open them up and run the system. How do I know if they leaked to much?

Hi I have a 27k diy mr cool unit. I have a possible leak in one of my lines, I have a professional hvac tech to check the system. He needs to know how much Freon or Refrigerant The compressor holds so he know how much he needs to put in.

I have the 3 zone unit and one of the pipes cracked when moving the condenser while it was off. I went ahead and closed the valves for that connection. Would I be able to buy a new precharged line to replace it instead of going through a HVAC repair service?

I have a bad board on the outdoor unit (DIY24000) and I was sent an entire new outdoor unit as a replacement. Can I just shut the valves on the unit and disconnect the line set to replace the unit? My understanding is that the line set has plunger valves in the connections that will seal in the refrigerant in the lines while they are disconnected. Is this correct? Just need advice. Thanks.

I had the following connection and cracked the 16ft line set while unrolling it in preparation to connect it to the condenser (ie nothing was connected to the condenser). 36k btu Air handler > 25ft Line set that came with system > couplers > 16ft line set My question is: can I simply replace the 16ft line or have more components in the connection above been damaged? I’m hoping it’s just a matter of replacing the 16ft line set given nothing was turned on and nothing was connected to the air handler. I’m just concerned that the connection between the damaged 16ft line and the 25ft line set might’ve damaged thr 25ft line set as well? Thanks!

Did my refrigerant systems from 12K BTU ductless get contaminated with moisture & air? if yes how can i fix it? I installed DIY ductless mini split last summer, it has been working really well until couple days ago our gardener accidently hit its suction line while the AC was still running. I shut the service valves off and fixed the broken line. It works again but it worries me that compressor sucked a lot amount of air and moisture. Please advise. Thank you.

I had a warranty claim on my circuit boards and was sent a Gen 3 indoor unit to connect up to my gen 2 condenser unit. Now I can't get my HP line to seal at the flared fitting at the condenser. Would you suggest I get new fittings brazed on or do you have an opinion on the Flareseal product? The Flareseal would be preferred if it works. Your opinion please.

Hey I had a similar problem on my 24k diy, I installed my unit was working 100% great and then like a dummy tried to straighten out a bend that looked to sharp to me and actually broke it and it had an obvious leak. after freaking out for 10 minutes I came to my senses and shut the condenser valves and disconnected it from the other 25ft length (i have 2). It was still leaking when I shut the condenser.. I should be able to replace that line and check the gauge if its low just add refrigerant up to appropriate amount yeah? I shouldn't have to suction is what im asking.

Hi Dan - Just out of curiosity, are the coils inside the MRCOOL DIY condensers and wall units also precharged? Since the DIY install doesn’t include pulling vacuum before charging, I was just wondering how those parts of the system get purged. Cheers,

Dan, sorry I'm getting back to you so late. I want to comment on your response to my original comment (that's a mouthful!). You state that the line sets on a MRCOOL DIY are pre-charged. I'm trying to understand how that could be when the line set is open when it's attached to both the inside unit and to the condenser outside. Only after the lines are attached at both ends are the lines at the condenser opened to allow the refrigerant to flow. At least that's the way I understand it. Help me to see where I'm mistaken. What is the primary reason a 5 ton Universal heat pump in heat mode will run just a short period of time then stop and throw a P5 code .. the air handler fan is running fine and the thermostat evidently is working fine, this is a new unit( Aug 2021) Thanks

I have two of these DIY systems. Are you sure it's the lines that are pre-charged? I thought the refrigerant was in the condenser. The lines are not sealed, how can they hold a charge? Thanks for your time.
