Airflow Problems & How to Fix Them

airflow problems A heating, ventilation and air conditioning system should provide quality air comfort throughout every part of your home. If a room feels clammy, never seems to stay cool, or obviously has airflow problems, that is a fixable situation. Unfortunately, until we build robots to maintain our HVAC systems (seriously science, where are my HVAC robots?!), the diagnosis and solution is something we have to take care of ourselves.

Airflow Problems & HVAC Sizing

Improper Sizes & You

When it comes to your home HVAC system, bigger is not better and too small is not good either. If you're having airflow problems, it could be that you're depending on an improperly sized system. Usually this problem occurs when the installing contractor makes a mistake while calculating how powerful an HVAC system you need. These calculations are a very big deal and 'back-of-the-envelope' isn't good enough. Ideally, you need Manual D and Manual J Calculations performed for your home, so you actually know what size your units need to be. In many cases, using the right size HVAC system solves a lot of problems.

Getting Manual D & Manual J Done Right

If you need either of these calculations, Ingram's Water & Air can provide the service directly or recommend a trusted contractor who will do it right. It's always a good idea for you to know what these calculations should be covering. For example, a Manual D and a Manual J should include some of the following:
  • Local climate seasonal conditions
  • Shape, size and house facing direction
  • Insulation
  • Quality, location and size of windows
  • Air infiltration

Don't Forget To Check the Obvious Stuff First

Badgers Causing AirFlow ProblemsOf course, before you get any calculations done or install new units, check the system yourself to make sure the problem can't be solved in a few minutes. For example, any of the following problems can block airflow:
  • Foreign material obstruction inside the duct
  • Dented, cracked, or disconnected ductwork
  • Broken vent
  • Dirty air filter
  • Zombie dirt-sharks
  • Badger infestation
Some of these are an easy fix. Some of these are not. Fix what you can fix, without violating your warranty, and call in a professional to fix the rest. In short, if you're having an airflow problem, rest assured it is solvable. Remember, if you have any questions, please give us a call at 800-360-1569.
