Cut Your Utility Bill Without Cutting Comfort

Cut Your Utility Bill Without Cutting Comfort
Do you dread opening your utility bill every month? Don't! There are practical, cost effective ways to reduce your expenses without sacrificing comfort. Most don't even require you to buy anything. Most.

Vampires

Kill the vampires! No, not blood sucking vampires, but energy vampires. Which is what exactly? An energy vampire is any electronic device that keeps drawing power when they shouldn't. Smart televisions, computers, tablets, phones, etc. All those devices continue to suck up electricity every minute they are plugged into a socket. You add a lot of fat to your utility bill that way. Turn off and unplug as many electronic devices as you can when you're not using them. You'll save a bundle.

Programmable Thermostat

If you're like most people, you have a programmable thermostat. Also, you probably don't use it. You should really start. Programming your thermostat to raise or lower the temperature when you are out of the house or asleep can reduce your utility bill by up to 20% per year. If you pay around $100 a month, you would have an extra $240 to buy Christmas presents with. Wouldn't you rather spend that on your kids than your electric company?

Reasonable AC

You want to be comfortable, and we get that. But don't go nuts. Keep your air conditioner on the absolute highest temperature setting you can stand. Compensate with ceiling or box fans to keep the air moving. The fans don't lower the temperature, but they do make you feel like the temperature is lower. And if you feel fine, does it really matter that the thermostat is slightly higher than you normally would like?

Insulation

Insulation is one of those home improvements that tends to be out of sight and out of mind. So, of course, it is one that can play a huge role in how much you spend on your utility bill each month. A poorly insulated house might have the most efficient air conditioner in the world, but the owner will still pay way too much each month. By contrast, great insulation can make a mediocre air conditioner perform like a champion. Most people are not qualified to add extra insulation to their home. You're probably going to require professional help, but it can be well worth it. Whatever you spend now you will make back every year over the next few decades or so.
