Whether you use a split system or a packaged unit, your home HVAC system carries a lot of responsibility. It keeps you cool in summer, warm in winter, and comfortable for all the months in between. It also dehumidifies the air which, depending on where you live, may or may not be a big deal. If you live in Vegas, high humidity probably isn't a major concern. It's a different story if your work commute takes you through the bayou. While comfort is a major factor, did you know that dehumidification can make you healthier too?
Bugs, Mold and More!
Moderate air humidity isn't a problem, but too much can cause big ones. Mold and mildew thrive in high humidity environments. So too do pests like mites, lice, cockroaches, moths and fleas. Yep, high interior humidity isn't just annoying. People with compromised immune system health face serious risks when living in such environments.
Automatic Dehumidification
Fortunately, modern air conditioners, energy efficient heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps dehumidify air automatically as part of their normal cooling cycle. For many areas of the country simply running the air conditioner during warm months is enough to produce significant humidity relief. Of course, some areas experience high humidity levels and extra steps may need to be taken.
Dedicated Dehumidification
If a typical air conditioner or heat pump isn't dehumidifying as much as you want, there are some technological remedies to solve your problem. The most basic is a portable dehumidifier to remove excess moisture. This will usually do the job. Of course, you can also invest in a variable speed air handling unit to increase your HVAC systems dehumidification efficiency and make sure your central heating and air system is properly sized. An improperly sized air conditioner, heat pump or air handling unit can exacerbate humidity problems.

Whatever the fix, make sure you solve a high humidity problem before it becomes a danger to your family.
