High Rise Heating for Hipsters (and Everyone Else)

High Rise Heating for Hipsters (and Everyone Else) Do you really want effective high rise heating, because you live in a fourth floor apartment and the building's boiler just isn't cutting it? You've probably used space heaters before, and regretted it. Raw electric heating works, sure, but it is expensive. With all the space limitations of an apartment, is there anything else you can do?

High Rise Heating is Going Ductless

No ground access might be a problem for a traditional central heating and air installation, but not a ductless mini-split heat pump. While it's convenient to install traditional condensers on a ground slab, many ductless mini-split condensers can be mounted on an exterior wall. This additional flexibility makes them a good choice for high rise air comfort problems. And this isn't some recent innovation. Ductless mini-split heat pumps and air conditioners are the system of choice for high rise heating and cooling in cities across Asia, Europe, Africa, and, well, everywhere except North America. Fortunately, that is starting to change.

Why Choose a Ductless Heat Pump?

Ductless mini-splits are ideal for situations in which you have a need for energy efficient air comfort and minimal space in which to install the system. A high rise apartment reliant on an outdated HVAC installation fits that perfectly. While there is plenty of room for a mini-split, installing just about any other conventional system would be prohibitively expensive. Even if you did carve out the space for a regular split system, why give up all that living area?

Efficiency & Performance

The other area of excellence that you get with a ductless unit in high rise heating is efficiency. Yes, obviously, there is more than enough room in a small apartment for a space heater. Those come in all shapes and sizes. No matter how big or small, they are all ridiculously greedy energy hogs. Ductless mini-split heat pumps are built for efficiency. They do not use electricity to generate raw heat like your toaster or oven might. Instead, they move heat around an environment to give you heated or cool air as necessary. So, if you want flexibility, performance, and cost effectiveness, go ductless for your high rise home.
