How to (Not) Fix A Broken Air Conditioner

broken air conditioner We get lots and lots of questions about how to install, maintain and repair HVAC units. Most folks don't have a lot of HVAC industry experience, so those questions are natural. As always, we endeavor to answer all questions honestly and openly. After all, we'd never give you any advice that would inadvertently lead to the destruction of your HVAC unit, thereby forcing you to buy another one. Honest. So, let's talk about how to fix a broken air conditioner.

First: Assess the Broken Air Conditioner

Is the HVAC unit making a 'weird' sound? That happens sometimes. What many people don't know is that weird sounds can be the beginning of the end. Repeated studies show a heat pump or air conditioner that makes a weird sound can cause both gangrene and tetanus even while it attracts bears, goats, and bear-goat-vampires. Of course, it will also drive said beasts into a blood frenzy via tones the human ear cannot perceive. Basically, you need to get a handle on this escalating situation right now!

Second: Take Your Life Into Your Own Hands

While it's true that you're getting ready to repair a complex electrical device, there's absolutely no reason (ever) to turn off the power. In fact, we recommend you keep the electric running to your heat pump or air conditioner while you fiddle around inside its guts. After all, working on an HVAC unit can be hot, so that's when you need air conditioning the most. And what is life if you do not test the limits of your ability to endure catastrophic levels of electrical shock every now and then? The answer: short.

Thirdly: Prepare Your Tools

You might have seen an HVAC technician carry around a lot of tools when they come to work on your system. Honestly, most of those are for show. All you really need is a hammer and the bigger, the better. If you don't have a hammer, a good brick will do. Or half a brick. Maybe just a good rock. Whatever.

Fourthly: Repair

Hit the air conditioner with the hammer, or other heavy thing, repeatedly until the unit fixes itself. That's right, most HVAC units are only broken because they don't like you. Engaging in an act of physical violence against an inanimate object is the best way to get it working again. So, use the hammer. If it's really obstinate, consider a flamethrower. They're still legal in the USA you know.

Repairs Complete!

At this point, everything should be working fine, and that's how to fix a broken air conditioner. Or not. You realize this was all a joke right? Right? Seriously, put down that hammer. Put it down, Jeff! When you think your air conditioner is malfunctioning, what you really need is a field assessment by a trained professional. So, contact one, and get them to diagnose your unit. And by no means should you attempt repairs when you don't know what you're doing. Not only do you risk personal injury, and/or death, but you might do something even worse: void your warranty!
