MrCool 3rd and 4th Gen DIY: What's the Difference?

MrCool 3rd and 4th Gen DIY: What's the Difference?
MrCool is a well-known manufacturer of DIY Ductless Mini-Splits, efficient central heat pump systems, and a number of other high-quality HVAC solutions. They also happen to be one of our favorite brands to sell, as their most popular product is easy to install and helps you save big on energy costs.  MrCool’s release of the 4th Generation DIY Ductless Mini-Split last year is definitely something to get excited about, but it might raise some questions. What’s different about this generation?  Read on to discover the impressive new additions, updates, and benefits of the MrCool 4th Generation DIY Ductless Mini-Split system.

Installation Differences

One of the most prominent differences between any other brand’s mini-split and the MrCool DIY ductless mini-split is its ease of installation. Nearly any homeowner willing to take on the challenge can easily install MrCool’s DIY ductless mini-split in a matter of hours, thanks to parts like its pre-charged line sets. This allows the homeowner to save time and money by installing it themselves. It’s hard to imagine the DIY 's installation getting much easier, but the 4th Gen managed to improve the system’s installation. The electrical side of the process has been greatly simplified thanks to the inclusion of the DIYPro cable. This cable eliminates the need for electrical conduit, protecting your system’s electrical connection from weather, pests, and even gardening mishaps. Your electrician will also be happy you chose the 4th Gen DIY system, because the connections are made simpler, resulting in less time spent working on your system.  An updated manual also clearly explains every step of the process, and it’s available online so you can prepare yourself for the installation before you even purchase the system. The DIYPro cable combined with the use of MrCool’s patented pre-charged R-410A Quick Connect Line Set makes the 4th Generation DIY Ductless Mini-Split the simplest installation in the HVAC industry.

Extreme Efficiency, Extreme Comfort

Since MrCool was already improving nearly every feature of the DIY Ductless Mini-Split, it’s only natural that efficiency levels would be positively affected within the 4th Gen.  For example, the 18k DIY Ductless Mini-Split increased from 20 SEER in the previous generation to 22 SEER in the 4th Generation. This significant jump is due to high-quality components, like variable-speed DC Inverter compressor technology.  The 12k, 18k, and 24k BTU DIY Ductless Mini-Split systems have earned a hallmark of energy efficiency, as well, because they are Energy Star certified. Besides the savings you’ll experience through your use of these systems, Energy Star recognition means that these units may be eligible for rebates and tax credits, to help you save even more money. The 4th Generation DIY Ductless Mini-Split has a variety of modes that allow you to customize your comfort experience and improve efficiency levels as it functions. Modes like SLEEP keep you comfortable while prioritizing power usage, and features like the Follow Me function ensure maximum levels of comfort at all times.

Nearly Endless Options

While MrCool wasn’t the first to think of a multi-zone mini-split, they were the first to release one that you could install yourself. The 4th Generation expands upon their initial DIY Multi-Zone system and adds two more condensers to cover whatever space you need.  The two newest condensers are the smallest and the largest multi-zone condensers. The 18k BTU dual-zone condenser can handle two air handler connections and is great for covering two smaller spaces, like bedrooms. The other condenser is a 48k BTU five-zone condenser that can handle any range of air handler combinations as long as the BTU capacity is above 36k BTUs and less than 60k BTUs. This means that you can potentially heat and cool your entire house with a MrCool Multi-Zone DIY Ductless Mini-Split System. Another exciting addition to MrCool’s 4th Gen DIY series is the DIY Ceiling Cassette, released last year. This air handler option, designed to be installed between standard ceiling joists or I-joists, seamlessly blends into a room. It also has a drop-down air filter, so you won’t need a ladder to clean the filter. This product comes in three sizes: 9k BTUs, 12k BTUs, and 18k BTUs. All sizes are compatible with the DIY Multi-Zone systems. The 18k BTU DIY Ceiling Cassette can be paired with a single-zone 18k BTU DIY Mini-Split Condenser. This DIY Ceiling Cassette offers a sleek, discreet, new way to experience comfort.  With the 4th Generation also came different line set sizes. Previously, only 25 foot and 16 foot options were available. Now, MrCool has pre-charged line sets for their DIY series products in lengths of 16, 25, 35, and 50 feet.

How Much Space Can the DIY Cover?

One of the great things about the DIY is that it can cover whatever space you want. Because climate, insulation, sun exposure, and other variables can affect sizing, the following list will indicate estimates of what the different BTU capacities can cover. If you’re unsure about what size you need, give us a call at 270-575-9595 and we’ll do our best to help you.
