There are a lot of ways to save money. We prefer doing so as painlessly as possible. So when we tell you how to save money on air conditioning, we don't expect you to suffer at the same time.
1. Turn Down (or Up) the Thermostat Just A Little
The easiest way to save money on energy is not to use as much. You can save substantial dollars by keeping your home a little cooler in winter and wearing multiple layers of clothing than if you just turn up the heat. Same goes for summer, but, of course, don't try the multiple-layers-of-clothing strategy in summer. You won't care for it.
2. Clean or Replace Your Air Filter
The air filter cleans the air and a dirty air filter can force your system to run less efficiently than it otherwise would. A less efficient system requires more energy and that means you pay more. Check your filter regularly and clean or replace it according to manufacturer specifications.
3. Clean Your Coils
Your air conditioner uses a coil to transfer heat in and out of the home. Sometimes those coils get dirty and, when they do, that can reduce heat transfer efficiency. As you probably already guessed, reduced heat transfer efficiency can make your system more expensive to run. Check your owner's manual and get the coils cleaned.
4. Use Your Programmable Thermostat
Many homeowners have a programmable thermostat, but never use it. If you're going away for vacation or are regularly out of the house for days at a time, program your thermostat to automatically turn the heat or AC down when you're gone. There's no need to pay for air comfort in an empty house.
5. Upgrade
Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. If your home is still reliant on outdated technology, you may be spending more money every month than that system's worth. Look into newer, affordable and energy efficient systems. They can last for years and can cut your energy costs substantially making it worth it over the long term.
