What Does an Air Handler Do?

Hey, we get it. You aren't an HVAC industry professional and you've got lots of questions about which system does what, for how long, and at what price. That's perfectly normal and giving you that kind of information is our job. So, just for starters, what does an air handler do?

It Doesn't Work On Its Own

They're always, always designed to be one component in a multi-part system. Which is why it is important to make sure your air handler and condenser are matched appropriately. So, really, the question shouldn't be, "What does an air handler do?" It should be, "How will a good air handler make my entire HVAC system better?"

It Does Air Flow

As you might expect given the name, an air handling unit moves air around. Without the air handling unit's blower motor and fan, most HVAC systems would have no way to keep cool or warm air circulating throughout a building. This is the biggest, most important job an air handler can perform. When you're thinking about a new system, this is a major consideration.

It Does Heat Transfer

Many air handling units are fitted with an evaporator coil so they can pass heat to an exterior condenser as part of an air conditioning system. When an air handling unit is paired with an energy efficient heat pump, the unit can also put heat back into the house for winter warming.

It Does Dehumidification

An air conditioner will dehumidify a home as part of the normal operating cycle and an air handling unit with a variable speed or multi-speed fan can improve the dehumidification process. If you live in a humid region, investing in a variable speed air handling unit isn't a bad idea.

It Does Energy Efficiency

A reliable air handling unit will play a big part in how efficient your overall HVAC system can be. Invest in an air handling unit with a high SEER rating to save money over the long term.

It Does Filter Air

Your air handling unit will automatically pull air through the filter to remove particulate contaminants like mold spores, bugs and pollen from the interior environment. Keep your filter clean to maximize these effects, and to preserve the operating life of your HVAC system. As you can see, there is a lot for a good air handler to do.
