Today's question comes from Deborah Jane. "Hey Dan, I'm hooking up to solar and want to know how an air conditioner, heat pump, and geothermal unit works? And how are they different? Should I go all electric using AC only with heat strips, get a heat pump or geothermal? I'm in San Diego." If you're in San Diego, I would look into getting a heat pump. If you're worried about low temperatures, you might look into dual fuel heat pump. You could get a coil. Unless you have a significantly-sized property, I wouldn't worry about geothermal. Since you're going to have solar panels, I would go with a heat pump as high an efficiency as you can get. Then, just enjoy the beautiful weather.

Hi Dan! I’ve been using a Mr.cool DIY 4 zone 36k unit in my home for about 5 months and couldn’t be happier. With cooler weather right around the corner in northern Ohio I am debating whether I should shut off the condenser for the winter or keep it on and utilize it as a heat pump for the next 6 months. I currently have high efficiency electric baseboards throughout my home that do a fine job of heating on their own. I’m curious whether you think it is a good idea to shut down the mr.cool condenser/ heat pump for 6 months at a time. I obviously want the unit to work as well as possible for as long as possible. Thank you for your advice!
