Ventless Wood Stoves are Science, Not Magic

Technically, there is no such thing as a ventless wood stove. Ventless heaters are only ventless, because they burn their fuel so efficiently. They can do that as a byproduct of their design and the composition of the fuel they use. Wood burns a lot cleaner than something like coal or crude oil, but it is not the cleanest burning fuel in the world. That means you're going to have waste products, and that means smoke. There's pretty much no way to burn real wood without getting smoke. Which eliminates any chance of there ever being a truly ventless wood stove.

When people, like me, talk about ventless wood stoves, they're talking about a ventless heating product with faux wood decor. Which is actually way, way better than a real wood stove. What most people want is the aesthetic appeal of a crackling, wood-burning fireplace. On a cold winter morning, they want to cuddle up around a cozy fire. What they don't want is a bunch of soot, ash, wood chips and splinters all over their house. Because while a real wood fire is incredibly warm and rustic, it's also really, really dirty. Getting all the smoke to go up the fireplace is virtually impossible. And with the soot, there's just no way to keep one as clean as you might like. Basically, a ventless wood stove is the way to go. You get all the stuff you really want without the stuff you don't.
