Making sure you have the right sized central split system heat pump for your home is one of the most important things to consider when making a purchase. Let's find out if a 4 Ton heat pump is okay for a 2,000 square feet space.

Our question today comes from Mickey in New York. Hi Dan, is a four ton 16 SEER split system heat pump suitable for the New York climate and for my 2,000 square foot home?
In terms of government regulation, 16 SEER is fine for a residential installation. The standard is 14 SEER, so 16 you're OK. A 4 ton heat pump in a 2,000 square foot home? Yeah, you're OK. That's probably going to be good so long as you have good insulation and good doors and windows, you're fine there. Of course, if you've got one wall that's open and you've got raccoons and things getting in then that's a bigger problem.
In either of New York's climate zones, a four ton should be OK. What I would say is a heat pump is good for spring and fall and summer, right? The lower the temperature gets, the lower the efficiency on a heat pump, particularly around Buffalo where you get the lake effect snow. You're going to want a gas furnace for the cold weather. You can get propane or natural gas or whatever, I just recommend a furnace for those areas.
