Does Anyone Make a Dual Fuel Mini Split? - Ask the Expert Episode 183

A dual fuel mini split air conditioner and gas furnace would be a great idea, right? Does a dual fuel mini split even exist though? "Does anyone make a dual fuel mini split air conditioner and gas furnace unit?" As far as I'm aware, no one makes anything like this. We don't have anything like that. All the mini splits we have are totally electric. Even the Hyper Heat Olympus and Mitsubishi units don't use any fossil fuel, natural gas, or propane. I don't know of any that do. There might be some out there. They probably wouldn't be a mini split though because furnace stuff is pretty big. I've never heard of a mini split furnace. It would be pretty neat if there was one! Will the Mr. cool mini split run on solar? if so what are the requirements to run it?

There is not a particular MrCool mini split intended for use with solar, and we don't have any info from the manufacturer about any testing they've done with solar. However, as just another appliance in a home that uses solar panels, there is no reason a MrCool unit shouldn't work.

Could you explain hyper heat that is noted on some of your units?

Hyper Heat units are intended for severe cold weather heating. In other words, Hyper Heat mini-splits are better at heating than other non-Hyper Heat mini-splits.

Daikin offers a mini split type condenser with a traditional force air gas furnace...well it's modulating of course, but basically an American furnace/blower setup with a real mini-split like heat pump. I may be looking closer at this system, assuming the inverter is the tried true tested international mini split type versus the Trane, Lennox, etc. wannabees.

That's an interesting set-up. Not quite a dual fuel mini-split, but as close as you could reasonably come.

I have a customer with what looks like a traditional ductless split with an internal gas burner to heat the refrigerant in heating mode. It's either a Samsung or Sanyo, works great.
