Does Anyone Make a Dual Fuel Mini Split? - Ask the Expert Episode 183

A dual fuel mini split air conditioner and gas furnace would be a great idea, right? Does a dual fuel mini split even exist though? "Does anyone make a dual fuel mini split air conditioner and gas furnace unit?" As far as I'm aware, no one makes anything like this. We don't have anything like that. All the mini splits we have are totally electric. Even the Hyper Heat Olympus and Mitsubishi units don't use any fossil fuel, natural gas, or propane. I don't know of any that do. There might be some out there. They probably wouldn't be a mini split though because furnace stuff is pretty big. I've never heard of a mini split furnace. It would be pretty neat if there was one! Daikin offers a mini split type condenser with a traditional force air gas furnace...well it's modulating of course, but basically an American furnace/blower setup with a real mini-split like heat pump. I may be looking closer at this system, assuming the inverter is the tried true tested international mini split type versus the Trane, Lennox, etc. wannabees.

I have a customer with what looks like a traditional ductless split with an internal gas burner to heat the refrigerant in heating mode. It's either a Samsung or Sanyo, works great.
