What is the Best Air Conditioner for Mining Cryptocurrency? - Ask the Expert Episode 247

Today’s question is from Steven. “Hey Dan, what kind of air conditioner should I get for mining cryptocurrency at home? I enjoy trading cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, Ethereum, & XRP. Now I want to get into mining cryptocurrency.” There are a lot of videos on YouTube about people mining cryptocurrency from home and they have a lot of computers set up. Computers generate heat. And you have to cool that somehow. I saw one guy with just a fan set up pulling in outside air to cool his computers. That’s a terrible idea. You know what’s outside? Mold spores, bacteria, dirt. That’s bad. You don’t want to do that. I would recommend a mini split as a method of cooling for mining cryptocurrency. First, you don’t have to cut a big hole in the wall for a mini split. You cut a three-inch hole for most of them for the conduit and piping. You can get a MrCool DIY or a MrCool Advantage or some other mini split brand. You would cool the computer you're using for mining cryptocurrency like you might a server farm. We use a mini split in our sever room at the office. Also, mini splits have low ambient cooling. Whether it’s hot or cold outside, you usually will want it cooling the computers because the computers will be giving off so much heat. Mini splits are also cheap. You are trying to make money mining cryptocurrency, right? You don’t want to put a lot of money into a big central system. You must also make sure there is a good air filter system. Again, you don’t want to try to cool your computer with unfiltered air. If you did, the computer you are using for mining cryptocurrency would collect dust and dust will hinder the way the computer cools itself, thus causing it to overheat. The mini split is the perfect kind of air conditioner for mining cryptocurrency.

The AC that you will need depends on the Power consumption..so if you are consuming 10 KV at 240 V then your amp is going to be around 45 amps …and now for AC BTU …240 V X 45 Amps =10800 then you need multiply this by 3.4 BTU =36720 ...so now you need an AC of 3 ton with 36000 BTU or 3.5 with 42000 BTU …depends on you but for me 3.5 ton AC seems okay as more cool AIR wont hurt the GPU

You never use an air conditioner for mining! The equipment is meant to handle fairly high temps. AC is never cost-effective and increased humidity at any level is a killer to the mining equipment. You simply contain and vent the hot air outside. If after doing that you have an ambient room temperature of 85F to 100F you are fine. If you can't keep it below 100F there are other solutions but never AC.
