Can I Attach a Water Tank to a Geothermal System? - Ask the Expert Episode 130

Geothermal heat pumps are a great way to heat and cool your home, but they can also be used as a source of hot water for your house. People are always looking for ways to make their heating and cooling more efficient; a geothermal system is a great option. Video Script: Today we have a good question. "Hey Dan, we're going to build a new home and we would like a geothermal system. Is there an attachment water tank so we don't have to get propane for hot water? Yes! What you will want to get is the Desuperheater for your geothermal heat pump. It's going to store excess heat and water so you can have hot water for showers and dishes and laundry and stuff. In the winter, however, if it's super cold and the unit is working hard, the system won't put heat into the Desuperheater it will put that into your home. So, you might need some propane in the winter, but it just depends on your unit and the situation you're in. Have more questions? Just ask them in the comments below or on Facebook or on Twitter.

Dan, I live in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca. And want to raise some catfish in an IBC tote in my well shaded backyard. Is there an easy way for me to keep the water in the tank 70° year-round? I was thinking about a small geothermal coil in the ground. Tank holds about 275gallons. Could I get by with a small horizontal coil 4-6ft deep?

Wow, Andrew, that's a really great question, but I'm not sure how much help I can be. What you really need is an thermal engineer. Best guess would be a 2 ton water to water unit. That MIGHT do what you need (emphasis on might). Normally we suggest a 600 ft coil in a 250 ft (horizontal) trench, 6 ft deep, per ton. A 2 ton unit would require two 250 ft trenches at 6 feet deep. You might be able to circulate the water through the ground with no mechanical equipment other than a pump, but, again, that is something a thermal engineer would need to calculate. Really interesting idea though!

I have a geo thermal heater/cooler. I put in a new water heater . The old water heater is attached to the geo thermal unit. Is there anything special I have to do when switching out old water heater with new water heater?
