Can the MrCool Universal Heat and Cool at the Same Time? - Ask the Expert Episode 231

Today's question comes from Ryan. "Hey Dan, can the MrCool Universal produce heat and AC at the same time? I own a rug cleaning facility and I'd like to cool the warehouse, but at the same time pump heat into a drying room and filter out the humidity in the drying room. I need to keep the dry room under 17 relative humidity."

No, the MrCool Universal can't heat and cool simultaneously. It can cool, and it can dehumidify while cooling, but it can't heat at the same time. I've never heard of an HVAC unit that could do both at the same time. Generally, no one ever needs that. For instance, there aren't a lot of people in Michigan going, "You know what I need this winter with my heat? A little air conditioning. Not a lot of people in Florida saying, "You know what I need this summer? More heating!"

No, it's one or the other, Ryan. Nobody makes a unit like that. What you're going to have to do is you're going to have to get two units. For your warehouse, you need an air conditioner. Keep that cool.

For your dry room? Your dry room is probably going to need two individual systems as well. You're going to want a heater, and you will want a dehumidifier. Any heater is not going to automatically dehumidify down to 17, and even an air conditioner typically doesn't dehumidify down to 17. You wouldn't want 17 percent humidity in your house. That would be very uncomfortable, not to mention the increased likelihood of static electricity build-up. You're going to need a dedicated dehumidifier to keep it down to 17 percent humidity.

I think probably what you should do is talk to an engineering firm to have them design a system because it sounds like you need something custom because you have very specific needs. That's what I would do.

Maybe they are referring to the single condenser unit outside and two internal units for two zones? I wondered the same thing since I have a small two story building and wanted to use a unit like that. The room upstairs gets warm and downstairs might possibly get cold so I wanted that option. I ended up going with two separate units but I am still curious.
