Can I Run Iron Out or Bleach Through Open-loop Geothermal? - Ask the Expert Episode 276

Today's question is from Kurt. "Hey Dan, can I run Iron Out or bleach through an open-loop geothermal unit that has high iron in well water?" Almost every geothermal manufacturer I'm aware of will not accept any significant level of iron as acceptable water quality. Any significant level of iron is bad. You can try something like Iron Out or CLR, but it's probably not going to remove the iron deposits significantly enough. Some places that have a high iron content probably shouldn't have an open loop geothermal system. But you could still do a closed-loop geothermal. That's still an option.

Hi Dan, I know they say open loop Geothermal systems shouldn't be installed in high mineral and iron water so I assume this rule was followed at the house I recently bought with an open loop geothermal system. The system dumps into a dry well that's buried in the yard. The area where this is has been squishy for a few weeks. Now I'm seeing standing water in my footprints. I cycled the Waterfurnace and ensured the valves were opening and closing correctly. Can these dump pits fail? If so what is the standard procedure for resolving the problem?

It is possible that this dump pit is not functioning correctly. Please give us a call at 270-575-9595 for more information, or contact a local geothermal technician.
