Can I Use a Mini Split as My Primary AC and Heat Up North? - Ask the Expert Episode 256

"Hey Dan, we're in Northwest Indiana. We are looking to put in a mini split as primary heat and air conditioner. Is this possible?" Yes, but you probably shouldn't. Most mini splits are not great heaters. Most of them can be like the Mitsubishi and MrCool Hyper Heat. Those are solid good heaters. All of them are really good air conditioners. They are really good at that. In Northwest Indiana, you're going to have some problems with heating. Anywhere north of Kentucky, you're going to want a furnace or a boiler.

I live about 80 miles north of Kentucky in Ohio and my Mr cool so far through 2 winters heats better than my pellet stove as far as the whole house.
Cold in the winter

This is why minisplits are not a good solution for anyone looking for replacement. Until the technology can advance to where it could be used as a primary reliable heat source, people will continue to just use traditional hvac.
