What Does FP Stand for on a Mini Split? - Ask the Expert Episode 222

Today's question comes from Jeremi. "Hey Dan, what does FP stand for?" Wow, that really depends on the context. In this instance I believe he's talking about for a ductless mini split. So, like on a MrCool Mini Split remote you will see a button that says "FP" and what that stands for is Freeze Protection. Basically if you're going to be gone for a while and you just want to keep the place where the unit is from freezing, you want to keep the pipes warm, you put it in FP mode. This will allow for the temperature to drop, but it won't get so cold that you have to worry about pipes freezing. It should keep the area above 40 degrees. This is also good if you have your mini split in a vacation home or a place you don't visit that often, but you want to keep it protected. Have more questions? Any HVAC system, condenser or otherwise, should be cleaned at least once per year. The best time to do so is just before the main season you're going to use it in. So, you would want to get an air conditioner cleaned and serviced before the summer heat started. If you want to get it cleaned after summer's over before you secure it for winter, that's not a bad idea either.

Frequent Pooper... classic lol. I just bought a home in Mexico and it’s filled with mini splits. Like you mentioned I won’t be here a all the time so I do want the FP on so that’s good to know (thank you) but I have another question. I turn the unit on, set it to 24, outside is say 36, everything starts up like normal and I see the FP message but the system doesn’t seem to be pushing really cold air. Is it cooling to the right level when you see the FP message? I don’t know if all systems are the same this one is from a company called Prime. I’ve read all the manuals and they mention FP but don’t explain anything about it. Thanks False Pretenses Fake Pony Fantastic Palapa

I'm not familiar with Prime products. That said, if the unit is maintaining the interior temperature, then Freeze Protection would seem to be working. I suspect you would only need it very irregularly in Mexico though.

Can you put the mini split in freeze protection from the app?
Dan Danowski

Yes, that should be possible on a MRCOOL DIY unit.

Hey Dan, thanks so much for the info! I just installed a minisplit for my sun room as a DIY project. Woke up this morning with FP on the unit display. "Failed Project" was my first thought. What a relief to find your video online. I watched several more for entertainment. You got any advice about a "Failing Prostate"?

My advice would be Find Physician.

Thanks so much. I really enjoyed your video. It was very helpful. Before watching your video and fully understanding what the freeze protection setting was I was concerned that I would have to leave our five mini split units set at 62° which is the lowest setting available. We have carrier units which say heat 8°C which is our FP setting. If this setting can prevent the pipes from freezing that would be fantastic and would save me from either having to overheat the house or shut the house down each time I leave. Again thank you so much.

I have a Premium Levella RGS7A6/BGEFU1 mini split. I had my temp set at 70° and I accidently hit the FP button on my remote. My temp started dropping in den and I could not figure out how to disable the FP. I finally turned the unit off for approx 3 - 4 min then turned it back on, set the temp to 74° and the fan on high. The room started warming again finally... What is the best way to disable the FP if this happens again? Thank you for your time, Pat

You may want to try holding that button, but if that does not work, turning it off may be the only way to halt freeze protection.

How is Freeze Protection different from setting the mini split to its lowest heat setting of 62F?

It's a bit more convenient. If you set it at the lowest temperature, it will try to keep the space the air handler it's in at 62ºF. In Freeze Protection mode, it will ensure that the unit only works as needed to ensure that it doesn't get damaged and that pipes don't freeze, keeping the space at a lower temperature than the lowest heat setting in typical heat mode.

Thanks for the video, though I seem to have found it later than most! Love the internet! I have an Amana unit in my sunroom in Northern Indiana and always wondered what this meant. My question: I don’t manually switch it into FP, this comes on automatically when it’s super cold outside. We turn the unit “off” at night before bed and sometimes this kicks on. Is it better to let this happen automatically or keep the heater function on at its lowest setting (low 60s). Seems like a waste if we aren’t in there.

It may be better to let this happen automatically, as the unit will sense when it needs to enter FP itself.

Thank you!!!! You gave the info but make me laugh as an extra. Also, the posts below were helpful as I tried to set it at 60. It went to FP. Back in the old days I couldn't ask some random question like this and get informed.
