How Much Will A Heat Pump Dehumidify? - Ask the Expert Episode 119

The question of how much a heat pump will dehumidify is a difficult one to answer. It is as different as each person's system setup.  We could measure it in a controlled environment, but it wouldn't be the same as it would be in your home. Find out why. Video Script: Sean in Pensecola asks: Hey Dan, I'm looking at a Daikin commercial heat pump. How many pints per hour does this unit dehumidify? Okay, I have no idea because we don't typically measure dehumidification on heat pumps that way or air conditioners. So, typically if you're talking to a tech about how a unit's dehumidifying, they can run some field tests, but you're going to have to actually do field tests on the unit in the location where it's running because the amount it will dehumidify is going to depend on local humidity.

So if you've got one in South Carolina where it's really humid, it's going to dehumidify a lot. If you're in Arizona it's not going to dehumidify because you're in a desert and you make bad life choices. So, that's just the way it is.

That is going to depend on the particular characteristics of the individual window air conditioner or heat pump. If you're talking about a central heat pump for whole-house air conditioning, it will almost always do a better job than a single window unit.
