How to Install the 3rd Generation MrCool DIY Ductless Mini Split

The 3rd Generation MrCool DIY ductless mini split comes with a host of new features and is even easier to install than previous models. In this video, we’re going to show you just how easy it is to install this 3rd Gen MrCool DIY ductless mini split heat pump yourself.

3rd Generation MrCool DIY Installation Tools

Some of the tools you’ll need are:

3rd Generation MrCool DIY Air Handler Installation

Once you’ve found the right spot in your space to install the mini split, use the included wall template to measure where you would like to place your indoor air handler. Then, use a stud finder to locate the best spot for your mounting plate. Use a level to make sure your wall template is straight, then use a screwdriver to mark your drilling points through the wall template. Also, mark the spot where you will later use a hole saw to drill through your wall for the line set. The mounting plate is located on the back of the air handler. Detach the mounting plate with a drill or screwdriver, then line up the plate with the markings you’ve made on the wall. As you’re securing the mounting plate to the wall, set a level on top of the mounting plate to make sure the plate doesn’t slope. Once the mounting plate is secure, use a three-and-a-half-inch hole saw to drill through your wall. The mark you made on the wall next to the mounting plate should be the center point for your hole saw. Push the provided wall sleeve through the wall and note how far it sticks out on the other side. You will want it to be as close to flush as possible. You can use a saw or knife to cut the wall sleeve as needed. Now take the air handler’s communication wire and feed it through the wall sleeve to the outside. Once most of the wire is out, slowly bend the piping until it is sticking straight out from the back of the air handler. Take the refrigerant lines, the drain hose, and the rest of the communication wire and push it through the wall sleeve, then connect the air handler to the wall mounting plate. The top of the air handler should hook onto the top of the mounting plate, then snap into place at the bottom. Outside, slowly bend the refrigerant lines so the lines fall downward along the wall. Add the protective neoprene inside the wall sleeve and around the line set. Don’t forget to set the wall sleeve cover in place before the next step. Then, connect the condensate drain hose securely.

3rd Generation MrCool DIY Condenser Installation

Once the air handler is secure, uncoil the line set that came with the condenser. Only uncoil the amount you think you may need for the line set to reach from the air handler to the condenser. Unscrew the color-coded caps on the ends of your refrigerant lines and thread them together by hand. Then use two wrenches to make sure they are secured tightly. Then, do the same thing with the refrigerant lines at the condenser. Once the refrigerant lines are secure, remove the valve covers on the condenser. Then, use the provided allen wrench to open the valves. Turn the wrench counter clockwise until it stops. Make sure you don’t force it. Use soapy water at both the condenser and air handler refrigerant connections to check for leaks. Replace the valve covers. Wrap the refrigerant connections near the air handler with sound deadening pads, then wrap it with the included vinyl tape.

3rd Generation MrCool DIY Miscellaneous Installation Notes

For wiring your unit, note the voltage for each system. Each of the wires are labeled and correspond by color and number. If you are not experienced with electricity, we recommend hiring an electrician for this portion of the installation. For the sleekest look, be sure to get the MrCool Line Guard to cover the refrigerant lines, condensate hose, and communication wire. Once the install is complete, don’t forget to insert the MrCool Smart controller so you can use the mini split with the MrCool Smart HVAC App. Also be sure to install the included air filters inside the indoor air handler. With the 3rd Generation MrCool DIY ductless mini split, it's easier than ever to install heating and cooling wherever you need it.

Hi- Thanks for the great video. What do you think of using a little thread sealant like Nylog during the installation on the refrigerant line threads of the MrCool DIY system?

We've never tried it. We don't think it would hurt anything.

Vinyl tape slips around. Why isn’t it sticky like tape

The manufacturer supplied the wrap for weather resistance. We have requested that they change to an adhesive version.

Is it necessary to pull a vacuum on the mrcool DIY line of mini splits? If so, how would one do so?

It is not necessary to pull a vacuum on the MrCool DIY.

They need to start providing an option for shorter linesets. That 25' is way too much, even for the shown system. If the outside unit is placed on a wall mounted bracket instead of a ground pad, and it's a 1st floor install, the lineset is almost not needed at all! In that case it's far better to route the lineset up and over the top plate into the attic, where it won't be unsightly, have issues with bugs or critters or lawn equipment, etcetera. In fact, after installing 5 different units on my house (you guys can verify that, LOL, you have my email) - the first one I did the same way the video describes by punching a hole through the wall (not easy if you have brick, btw), and the rest I ran the lineset up into the soffit and over the top plates, then back down into the house. With a little ingenuity it doesn't end up looking any different, with the trick being a small notched cut (mind your codes people) in the top plate and a wizard of a drywall guy. It's not possible to put holes in the top plate, unless you've got larger lumber than normal. Ultimately the reason for this comment is to get Mr. Cool to have, as an option, custom lineset lengths. Or at least 5', 10' sections instead of the 25. (Extending them is no issue, up to 50'- but theres no shorter option.) Lastly, the units have all been in service for 1 year. I follow all the maintenance items religiously, and these systems have been extremely reliable; cold in the summer, hot in the winter, as expected. Thanks IWAE!

MrCool line sets are also available in a 16' length. While it might seem like a good idea to have shorter line sets, many times there is a minimum line set length that is required. We're glad that you discovered a solution, though, and we're glad that you're satisfied with your systems!
