Should A Mini Split Air Handler Be Installed High On The Wall? - Ask the Expert Episode 180

We get asked quite a few installation related questions about the ductless mini split air handler.

The question we have today comes from Gib Gibson. Gib says, "Does the inside part of a ductless mini split have to be installed up high on the wall?"

So, what he's talking about is the inside part of a ductless mini split air handler. That's got the fan in it and the evaporator coil and it blows the air out. Usually, you're going to put that up on a wall, maybe seven or eight feet up, maybe even higher.

Pretty much all the manufacturer installation instructions will be like "hey, install this high up on the wall." But you don't have to do that. If you wanted to install it at waist-height, you could. However, it's not going to work as well. Basically, the way the louvers are on the bottom of those units, it would just be blowing the air mostly into the floor. It won't get distributed throughout the environment as much as you want. We don't recommend that, but it's not like, if you do that, it's going to turn into a Decepticon and awaken in the middle of the night and ship your cat to Fiji. Though, if it does, let us know.
