Thermostats come in a wide variety of options. When you buy a new air conditioning system it can be confusing to know which one to buy. Dan can help you figure out what to look for. Video Script Welcome to Ask the Expert, I'm the expert, Dan Danowski. Our first question is from J. Greer in Burlington Coat Factory, Vermont. (I feel like part of that is wrong.) Hey Dan, how do I know which thermostat to get with my new HVAC system? If you get a new heat pump or air conditioner, and you want to know what kind of thermostat you need to get. At the very least, you are going to need to get a thermostat that works with the different stages of heating and cooling. Let's say you get a two-stage heat pump, and it's got a heat strip. So, you have two stages of cooling and three stages of heating. So, you're going to need a thermostat that can do at least two stages of cooling and three stages of heating. It's just like addition in math. You just add things. If you're not sure about which thermostat you're looking at on our website, you can just call us and we can let you know. Have more questions? I read that you don't save money by adjusting geothermal systems so there isn't a need for programmable thermostats. My wife likes it cooler at night and warmer in the morning when she wakes up. Is there anything wrong with a programmable thermostat on a geothermal system?

It still depends on your personal preference! Many people use a programmable thermostat to help save money, but if you and/or your wife like a certain temperature at a certain time, then it's reasonable to want a programmable thermostat!
