How Long Should HVAC Systems Last? - Ask the Expert Episode 107

In this Ask the Expert episode, Dan Danowski explains how long various HVAC systems typically last. Video Script: Our first question is from John in Clearwater, Florida. He asks, "How long do HVAC systems last?" If you're about to buy a new air conditioner or a furnace, you might think, ok, how long is this going to last me? That's going to depend on what you get. You get a regular old central air conditioner system? It's probably going to last about 12-15 years, give or take. A heat pump should last between 15-16 years, which about average. A gas furnace should last between 15-25 years, maybe a little longer. So, like the length of a first marriage. The important thing to remember is the better you take care of your system, you keep your air filters changed and you get regular maintenance, they are going to last even longer and you're going to get better efficiency when you're doing all that. Dan, how do I know if I need a new AC/Heat pump.I have a Trane XR11 (model #2TWR1048A1000HB) my outside condenser fan was running slow, stopping and making a loud noise/hum. The compressor was coming on. I replaced the capacitor, cleaned the fan shaft of debris (it did have some pine needles wrapped around it), and sprayed the shaft with some WD40. After doing all that the fan turned at normal speed and we had cool air (yahoo). However the cool air only lasted about 2 hours and the fan stopped again. I turned everything off and tested turning the fan by hand and it seems to turn smoothly, nothing hanging up. Now the compressor doesn't come on and we don't have cool air. The condenser fan does come on at normal speed, however it stops and starts. Do I need a new AC Heat Pump or should I try to get it fixed? Thanks for any help. Maria

Hi Maria, It sounds like a bad capacitor. But you might also need a new fan motor. We would recommend having a tech come out to diagnose the problem, and give you a repair estimate. Then you can decide which makes more financial sense: getting the repair or getting a new unit. Obviously, we would love to sell you a new unit, but if it's a cheap fix, that makes a lot more sense for you.
