Today's question comes from Mike. "Hey Dan, what's the lowest temperature setting on the MrCool Smart Controller? For example, can you set your house for 50 degrees if you're away for a few weeks?"
So, Mike is talking about the Smart Controller for the MrCool mini splits. The Smart Controller allows you to connect the MrCool unit to your phone via the MrCool SmartHVAC app. That would allow you to change the temperature remotely, but it will not let you turn it down to 50 degrees. For example, the lowest temperature setting on the MrCool DIY is 62 degrees.
Most mini splits are not going to let you set the temperature down to 50 degrees. But if you're going to be out of the house for a few weeks in the winter, setting the temperature down to a lower temperature is a good idea. You should always do that because it will save you a lot of money. Even if you can't go down to 50 degrees, if you can still go down to something like 62, then that's good.
And if you have some other form of heat like a furnace, then you might be able to just turn the mini split off while you're away.
Of course, the same is true for the summer. If you're going to be gone, turn the temperature up so your house is not as cool as it would be when you are in it. I think you can set the cool point to 80 degrees max.
