Are There "Natural" Ways To Help Defrost My Condenser? - Ask The Expert Episode 306

Today's question is from Bill. "Hey Dan. Is it ok to go outside and urinate on my mini split to help it defrost faster?" No, that's not okay. Besides it possibly being illegal, urine is also corrosive. Using corrosive material on the copper coils will not be good for it. Just get an extension cord and a blow dryer. Don't use it too close to the coils, but it will help melt the ice quickly, and it will be better for your condenser.

Hi Dan, The foam that is wrapped around my Mr. Cool mini-split coil outside behind the unit, is starting to crumble and fall off. The line from the house that goes down to the unit is covered with a plastic duct and should be OK, I hope. I've only had the unit for 2 winters. Is there a recommended replacement cover that will last longer. I'm in New England and have it running in the winter for heat too.

Dan, One of my interior wall units freezes up every time I use the “dry” mode. It’s only one of the two units. The filters are cleaned regularly. Turning the wall unit off does not allow it to thaw, even with a hair dryer. It thaws fairly quickly after I turn the breaker off for the whole system. It also makes a big mess. Thank you for your help.

Hey Dan-O Do I need to connect my Mr. Cool DIY outdoor units using a 240v GFCI? Or is GFCI circuitry built into the unit itself, like in the Tesla home charger? Thanks in advance :) Vin

It depends on what you have. The 12k is a 115-120V system, and the 18k, 24k, and 36k are 208-230V systems. They must be hardwired into an appropriately sized disconnect box.
