What is a Package Unit? - Ask the Expert Episode 116

With so many kinds of air conditioning systems out there, it's hard to keep up sometimes. In this episode we help to clarify what a package unit is? Video Script Our question comes from Nancy in Memphis, Tennessee. What is a package unit? A package unit is pretty simple. It's a big box that sits outside that sits outside your house and all the stuff goes in it. If you've got an air conditioner it will have a condenser, an evaporator coil, a compressor, and a fan. It is all going to be in this box and it's all going to cool your air. It's going to be hooked up to ductwork and air is going to go in and out and it will blow cool air into your house. You can do heating and cooling in a package unit. You can get a package heat pump. You can get a gas pack, which is an air conditioner with a furnace. You could get a dual fuel, which is a heat pump and a furnace. The nice thing about a package unit is they are really easy to install. You don't have to do anything with refrigerant. Nobody has to charge the system because it comes out of the factory pre-charged and sealed. You just set it on the concrete pad, connect it to the ductwork and you're good. Obviously, you're going to need electricity because it's not like this thing runs on good intentions. We're working on that though. Have more questions? i own a house in So.Carolina, but we only visit a few times a year. im spending $40 a month on AC, to keep from getting condensation/mold/mildew. I'm interested in possibly going to Geo-Thermal. would this be a good fit, and make sense, economically?

For a $40/month AC bill, you would see savings from geothermal, but probably not enough to make a difference long term. Let's say your new geothermal cut your AC expenses in half. You're saving $20 per month and $240 per year. So, it would take decades to make up the price difference between a geothermal and a conventional. You would get great comfort and a low bill, but I don't think it would make sense since your bill is already so low.

How much are the units

Package unit price varies depending on tonnage, efficiency, capability, and other factors. Big commercial units can cost as much as $16,000 while an economic residential unit might be priced as low as $2,000 or less.
