Can I Add Multiple Air Handlers to a MRCOOL DIY Condenser? - Ask the Expert Episode 163

Updated 2020: You can now connect multiple air handlers to a MrCool DIY condenser, thanks to the new MrCool DIY Multi-Zone systems. These new MrCool DIY Multi-Zone mini splits allow you to connect up to 4 air handlers to a single condenser.

Ductless mini splits are great, and we sure love the MRCOOL DIY, but a lot of people are asking how to connect multiple air handlers to them. Is it even possible? Video Script: "Hey Dan, is it possible to connect three or more air handlers to one MRCOOL DIY condenser?" We get this question a lot! The quick answer is no. The MRCOOL DIY is a single zone ductless mini split, which means you only have the one outside condenser and the one inside air handler. If you want to do multiple air handlers but only have one outside condenser, you have to get what is called a multi-zone. You can't get the MRCOOL DIY in a multi-zone. Not yet, anyway. That said, we have a lot of mutli-zone units. You could get a multi-zone Gree or Mitsubishi. There is also a MRCOOL multi-zone called the Olympus. With a multi-zone you can have up to five inside air handlers to one outside condenser. Have more questions? Just ask them in the comments below or on Facebook or on Twitter.

Okay, do you offer ANY multizone units that are DIY in the same way the "MrCool DIY" is DIY???

We would love to, but unfortunately we do not. As far as we know, there are not any multi-zones that offer similar DIY capability.

Hi Dan ... I'm interested in a multi-zone Olympus. We are remodeling our home and wondering if we buy a 4 zone condenser can we attach only one air handler at a time as the rooms are completed. Then when the next room is completed add the second and so forth? Or do they all need to be connected at the same time?

Yes, you can do that. There will be a specific amount you have to connect to be functional. For example, you would need to connect more than a single head to start with. However, you could then come back later and add on additional air handlers.

Hello I was curious . I know the Mr. Cool DIY doesn’t yet sell a multi zone it only comes single zone . So my question is can’t we just buy two Mr. Cool DIY single zone ductless mini split systems - one for large bedroom and one for living room / kitchen ? Our house is only 1,100 square ft .

Yes, you can do that.

I currently have a 12k advantage system its not quite keeping our addition warm enough could i buy just the 18k condenser and hook it up the currently installed air handler?
Kyle

I’m sorry but the 18K condenser will not function properly with the 12K air handler. Has the air temp differential or operating pressures been checked to verify proper operation?

Dan: I just pre-ordered a DIY mr cool multi-zone unit. From Ingrams. I am wondering if you all are on the same page over there

Yes, MrCool does now have a DIY Multi-Zone. Well, they will. Technically, it hasn't come out yet. When we answered this question last year, there was no such thing as a DIY Multi-Zone.

Can I hook up the Olympus flush mount ceiling head unit to the18k DIY condenser unit in place of the normal head unit it comes with? Not much head room where we want to install
Kyle

No, that is not possible. The DIY condenser is only compatible with DIY air handlers.

I installed a 18k unit in a 560sqft house last year 10/19 and my mom says it doesn’t cool or heat like she thinks it should. Can I install another air handler on her unit? I had an a/c heat expert install this unit when installed. Is there anything (tips) you could tell us that might help Thanks

Can you install a second air handler? You can if the condenser is designed for multi-zone capability. If you purchased a single-zone 18k, the condenser probably isn't a multi-zone condenser. The first thing you should do right now is have the installing tech come out to inspect the unit to make sure it is operating properly.

I'm looking to purchase a 3 zone DIY 27k (9k,9k,9k) with 16/16/75 line sets. I'm going to install all 3 units to the condensor and release the refrigerant to all 3. My question is... once all 3 air handlers are connected, can I run just 1 air handler and leave the other two off? Example.. if only one room gets hot I want to leave the other 2 rooms off. Model to purchase: Model #DIYM327HPW00B02

As long as at least two are connected to the outdoor unit, operating only one air handler should be good.

Hi Dan hope you are doing well. i am interested in buying a mr cool 36 k DIY multi zone split. My question is the unit im looking at will accept 4 indoor units. is it possible to exceed the 36 k rating with the indoor units? i am looking to put 18k for my living room. 1- 18 k for my garage and 1- 9 k indoor unit for my daughters bedroom. i wasnt sure if the system has some diversity or if the indoor btu cannot exceed the outdoor rating. Thank you for taking my question.

While we do not have this specific configuration available, you can exceed the BTU rating of the condenser. If the air handlers exceed the condenser's BTU capacity, the air handlers will experience a decrease in output.

We bought a three headed unit and want to connect only two to begin with. Can we add the third later?

If the BTU capacity of the two air handlers equal at least half of the BTU capacity of the condenser, it's fine.

Hi Dan, great video. I installed a Mr. Cool 36K DIY multi zone, with one 12K Air Handler which is working fine, then came back two days later and installed another 12K Air Handler on the same unit. But now I’m getting a P6 Error code on the Air Handler, the code means low pressure. Did I need to connect both 12K units at the same time to make sure I was using at least half of the capacity of the 36K unit initially? How do I fix this? Thanks in Advance.

Yes, you would have needed to have enough air handlers to account for at least 50% of capacity. You should contact MRCOOL customer service.

2Part Question… I just recently purchased 2 4th gen Mr cool systems….1 is a 36K bundle with 9+9+18k handlers. The other is a 27k bundle with 9+12 handlers. Can I add 1 extra handler to each of these condensers and if so, what is the max each can be? Thanks!

While these condensers are technically able to handle at least three air handlers, you wouldn't want to greatly exceed the capacity of the condenser with the air handlers. You could not add another air handler to the 36k system without greatly exceeding capacity. You could add a 9k air handler to the 27k condenser configuration you mentioned and only surpass condenser capacity minimally.
