Can I Add Multiple Air Handlers to a MrCool DIY Condenser (Updated 2020) - Ask the Expert Episode 220

In 2019 someone asked us, "Hey Dan, is it possible to connect multiple air handlers to one MrCool DIY condenser?" A year ago it wasn't possible to connect multiple air handlers to a MrCool DIY Mini Split. But the MrCool DIY Multi-Zone has now made it possible. In fact, you can connect up to 4 air handlers to a single MrCool DIY Multi-Zone condenser.

I have a 36K BTU Mr Cool DIY I bought from you guys last year. I understand about the new multi-zone option for new DIY units. Can you clarify that only those will work for multi-zone, or can I add another air handler (somehow) to my current unit... got the one (4th gen I think) with USB stick for MR Cool remote app functionality/control. Thanks!

Yes, I can confirm that any DIY you bought last year will NOT work in a multi-zone format. For multi-zone, you have to specifically get the MrCool DIY Multi-Zone.

How well do your units cool in the upper peninsula of Michigan????

Given the latitude, basically all of the air conditioners and heat pumps we have in inventory would cool well in Upper Michigan.

Do I need to install a two-zone DIY at the same time (both air handlers) or can I install the 18K and wait a year for some work to be done to a room then install the 12K? (FYI, my wife and I have started to watch your videos for fun. You do you, great job)

If the 18k air handler is at least 50% of condenser capacity (which it seems like it should be given that the other air handler is a 12k), then you can wait to install the 2nd zone later. Thanks for the compliment! We're glad you enjoy the videos.

Can I buy a MrCool olympus cassette air handler to connect to a DIY multi-zone condenser?
Kyle

I'm sorry, but the Olympus cassettes are not compatible with the DIY condenser, multi-zone or otherwise.

Apart from the drain line, which I realize, must always flow down hill, would it be OK to run the refridgerant lines up about 15" into the attic and then down through the soffit to the condensor? Thanks for your help!

Yes, the refrigerant lines can run up and then down to the condenser.

Can I use both cassette and ductless on a multi zone unit??

You could not use a cassette on a DIY Multi-Zone. However, you can use cassettes and air handlers on the Olympus Multi-Zone.

I’m new to mini split units, so a couple of basic questions (I think): I assume each air handler connects directly to the condenser by its own line set. I know line sets can come in different lengths, but do they have different capacities? Can the condenser unit be higher than the air handler, say in an attic, if you have proper ventilation?

Yes, each air handler will typically connect to the condenser with its own individual line set. There are different size lines, but a single system would generally have the same size lines for all the air handlers. Condensers can be installed higher than the air handlers. However, it is rarely a good idea to install them in an enclosed space like an attic.

I have a question I got the multi zone unit can I only run two the of air handlers and then in the future connect the thrid one for future room use just as long as I dont open the valves right?
Dan Danowski

Yes, you do not have to use the maximum capacity of a multi-zone unit at the beginning. You could add a 3rd air handler later.

Can I use the multi zone condenser for just one unit in the upstairs bedroom and add another unit in the living area at a later date? I was told that a condenser is either single or multiple and you cannot use a multiple to run a single zone.

You can add units later to a multi-zone. The caveat being that however many air handlers you are running need to equal at least 50% of the capacity of the DIY Multi-zone condenser.

Can I upgrade my single zone DIY to a multizone condenser and reuse my old air handlers?
Dan Danowski

In general, no.

Is it safe to only have one air handler running and the other one turned off? Or do they both have to be running at the same time. I have a 36k multizone condenser and 2 12k air handlers connected to it.

To properly work, the running air handlers must equal at least half of the capacity of the condenser. You would not be able to run a single 12k BTU air handler on a 36k BTU condenser, because it does not meet half the capacity of the condenser. Doing so may put unnecessary stress on the unit.
