Is the MrCool Universal Heat Pump a Ductless System? - Ask the Expert Episode 199

Today's question is from Michael. "Hey Dan, is the MrCool Universal a ductless system?" The MrCool Universal is a central heat pump split system from MrCool. MrCool is known for its ductless mini splits. We've got a bunch of their ductless mini splits and they sell pretty well. But the Universal is not a mini split. It is not a ductless system. It is a central heating and air conditioning system. You can only get it in a ducted system. That's the only way it comes. You can't get it ductless. But hey, if MrCool comes out with a ductless Universal system, we'll let you know.

Is there a good thermostat that would take full advantage of the variable speed compressor and blower motor in this MrCool split heat pump system? Most of the ones I see are a 3 stage for a two stage compressor and one stage heat strip. Would the thermostat for their Mini split work with this or do I have to stay with a traditional thermostat?

I am buying a home with a 28 yo hybrid HVAC system. I.E. Oil hydronic boiler with water-to-air heat exchangers and a conventional forced-air Air conditioner system. This is also a two zoned system with a domestic hot water heat exchanger. I have experience with the efficient Mr. Cool Minisplit systems and was wondering if a Mr. Cool Universal HVAC system would be a good upgrade path? Do I need a complete evaporator and air or is there an A-coil condenser heat-pump Mr. Cool configuration?

Could universal work with a gas furnace? If so, the air handler goes with the furnace or the coil?

Hey Dan, I live in a mobilehome with a downflow system. Was wondering if I could use the mr. Cool universal heat pump condenser with a signature series handler with a downflow conversion kit.
