Do I Need a Pro to Install a Ductless Mini Split? - Ask the Expert Episode 117

Today, Dan Danowski walks us through the question - Do you need a pro HVAC technician just to install a ductless mini split system? Video Script: Lamar asks: Hey Dan, why do I need a pro AC man to install a mini split heat pump? Most mini split heat pumps are as complicated as conventional systems or as a unitary system, they just don't have ductwork. That makes them a little more flexible about where they can go, but they still have to have evacuation, charging, proper placement, sizing, and electrical. So, most people don't know how to do all that. So, most mini split, you need a professional. If you don't want to pay a guy, get a MRCOOL DIY. We sell those. They don't have to be vacuumed or charged. It's all pre-charged and sealed. Those are easy to put in. You're still going to need to have an electrician to do the wiring unless you know how to do that. Have more questions? Just ask them in the comments below or on Facebook or on Twitter.

we cannot get an HVAC guy to come to our house to charge, evacuate or check hoses. They say they don't want the responsibility or liabilty. It is installed with the proper electrical system. Any suggestions? Or do we have a $1000 unit sitting here for nothing?

If you have a DIY, you don't need anyone to charge, evacuate or check hoses. If you have a conventional system, yes, it is recommend to have a professional conduct the installation. You may want to use online resources like Home Advisor, Angie's List, and others.
